The Wellington fire disaster on November 5th 2021, that claimed more than 100 lives, highlighted the need for skills in the management of burn  injuries among healthcare workers. A a response Global Surgery Amsterdam developed the “Basics of Burn Care Course”. The first course in Masanga was held by Amara Conteh and Maria Bakker(MD) in April 2023. The course was hands on and interactive, utilising innovative material ranging from fruits to silicone in the practical skills training. The course covered topics from management of feber in burn injury patients, prevention of contractures by timely surgery and physiotherapy, to management of compartment syndrome by escharotomy.The course was well received and we are happy to announce that new “Basics of Burn Care Courses are planned for March and May 2024.
