When did you stay at Masanga?
November 2012 and 2013
What was your motivation for going to Masanga?
Other volunteers in the project informed me about Masanga. I understand the urgent need for personnel, skilled in obstetrics and surgery, in Sierra Leone. The STP programme seems to me the best way to meet this need.
What was your first meeting with Masanga like?
The welcome was perfect. I have never heard the word welcome and thank you so many times in one day. And of course, the surrounding of the hospital is very appealing; tropical forest with birds and other animals, beautiful.
What was your main duties while at the hospital?
Training the STP students. Together with Heleen Winter and Frank van Raaij we were able to teach both in the classroom as well as in the hospital. Theory was fused with practice.
What have you learned from this experience?
It has confirmed the urgent need for training people. But also I learned that the potential is great. I was amazed by the steep learning curve of many of the students.
What is your advice to others that are thinking about going to Sierra Leone and Masanga?
First accommodate to the local setting, take a look around, level with your students and get to know their background. Then proceed with an open mind and witness the incredible possibilities of Masanga!
