When did you stay at Masanga?
One week in September 2011 and in January 2014
What was your motivation for going to Masanga?
I have always wanted to be involved in a project in a developing country. My collegues Håkon Bolkan and Brynjulf Ystgaard asked me if I could help out with the STP-program and I was happy to say YES! Working closely with the members of the CapaCare board and see the results of the training gives me great joy.
In addition to this I have always had a childhood dream of going to Africa.
What was your first meeting with Masanga like?
Exciting, motivating and warm. Nice people everywhere! Motivated STP-candidates working hard to improve surgical skills.
What was your main duties while at the hospital?
To learn about the STP-program, get to know the hospital, meet people and assisting the interviews with new potential students. Visit partner hospitals.
What have you learned from this experience?
That the STP-program is worth while! You can do a lot, even if the resources are few.
What is your advice to others that are thinking about going to Sierra Leone and Masanga?
Be prepared to meet very nice people! Plan your journey and try to adapt to the local situation. Take a lot of photos of the children at Masanga. Their happy smiles are worth a million dollars!
